My interest is in the study of colonial governance, settler resistance, and the socio-economic activities during the colonial period. My research focuses in the Kingdom of Guatemala — the territory that broadly encompassed present-day Chiapas and the Central American countries of Guatemala, El Salvador, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica — in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. I am currently working on investigating the illicit trade encountered during this period to understand its role in shaping the colonial administration, economy and social structure of the Kingdom of Guatemala.
