Excavations at the Burial Tumulus of Lofkënd in Albania

November 6, 2009 @ 12:00 am

Between 2004 and 2008 UCLA archaeologists and their Albanian collaborators excavated one of the last remaining undisturbed prehistoric burial mounds in Albania. Dating from the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age (ca. 14th – 9th centuries B.C.), the cemetery yielded 100 graves and numerous spectacular finds in bronze, gold, iron, clay, semi-precious stone, and glass. This presentation tells the story of the excavation of the tumulus, as well as the survey around it, the reconstruction of the mound at the end of the project, and its ramifications for the prehistory of Europe.
This event is sponsored by the Archaeology and Ancient Borderlands Research Focus Groups.
