Global South Asia

HIST282G

About the Course:

Global South Asia surveys the literature on global and world-historical developments scaffolding South Asia across various time periods and time scales. It emphasizes scholarship on connections, comparisons, networks, and solidarities. It aims to give students a view of the current state of the field and makes an argument for reading the field for the multiple politics of location and an emphasis on structures of power and difference that both enable and trouble different visions of the world, past and future. Each week of the syllabus provides a different “view from,” linking Central Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean, East Africa, East Asia, and the Atlantic and Pacific Worlds, using one book and two research articles, to help students identify scholars whose work will be helpful to them in the future.
