Requirements for the Minor in History, 2005-2006

All courses to be applied to the minor must be completed on a letter-grade basis. This includes both courses offered in History and those offered by other departments and applied to the minor.

PREPARATION:

12 lower-division units in History

UPPER-DIVISION:

20 upper-division units in History

The Department strongly recommends that one of the upper-division courses be a proseminar (undergraduate research).

Substitutions and waivers are subject to approval by the chair of the department.

Students must consult the General Catalog for prerequisites to required courses.

The following conditions must also be met for official recognition of the minor:

• The sponsoring department reports completion of the minor prior to the posting of the degree.

• At least 18 upper-division quarter units are completed for the minor. (Waivers cannot reduce the requirement below this number.)

• The UC grade-point average in pertinent upper-division courses is 2.0 or higher.

• No more than 5 upper-division units overlap between this minor and the upper-division portion of the major(s) or other minor(s). If overlap is greater with the major(s), completion of the minor will not be formally recognized; if overlap with other minor(s) is greater, only the first minor reported will be recognized.

No reference will be made to the minor on any progress checks or degree clearance forms.

History Minor Courses:

Everything has a history. Religion, science, technology, economics, politics, literature, ethnicity, race, class, gender, society, communications, music, architecture, etc. -- the list encompasses all the categories that have been devised for the placement of human knowledge. No matter what your interests are and what your major is, they have a history. What follows are some suggestions about how you could cluster courses in such a way as to create a history minor based on a particular theme. The History Department does not require that you choose any of these "clusters" in order to minor in history or that you should cluster your courses at all. There is nothing wrong (and there can be much to gain) by choosing courses based entirely on the quality of the teaching as you perceive it, regardless of subject. A brilliant teacher can make anything interesting, and you are here to have your mind not only filled, but stretched.

The requirement for a history minor is quite simple: 12 lower-division and 20 upper-division units in history. We strongly recommend, but do not require, that 4 of these units be in an undergraduate research seminar (proseminar -- any course with a P in its designation). If you are looking for ways to cluster the courses in your history minor so as to focus on particular aspects of human history, you may find the suggestions below helpful. Where more than 12 units of lower-division courses are listed, choose any 3 courses. Also, remember that in some areas further focusing is possible by concentrating on, for example, the colonial or national periods of Latin American history, the classical, medieval, early modern or modern periods of European history, etc. Only lower-division courses that are offered with some regularity are included in the lists below. An asterisk indicates that there are 2 or more courses in a series, any of which is appropriate. The 133 series, for example, contains seven courses. See the UCSB General Catalog for details.

Please remember that if you choose to have an emphasis in your minor, it is unofficial and will still be designated on your diploma and official transcript as a "Minor in History" only.
