| These pages reflect a portion of the
research conducted on Frederic E. Clements' association with the Campbell Ranch and
Devereux Slough under The Campbell Ranch Research Project at the University of California
at Santa Barbara. Ongoing investigations focus
on identifying, cataloguing, and preserving the remnants of Dr. Clements influential work
conducted on the Campbell Ranch beginning roughly in 1927. Further research is also being
conducted regarding local patronage of Dr. Clements work and the introduction of floral
species at his associated experimental gardens in Santa Barbara in Mission Canyon and in
the Santa Ynez mountains.
Devereux Slough and most of Dr. Clements' coastal
work in Santa Barbara is currently housed within the Coal Oil Point Natural Reserve. The
examination of this early 20th century ecological experimentation exposes both the
importance of the area's preservation and the need to consider both ecological and
historical factors when managing such preserves.
