• February 2-3, 2012 "The Port Huron Statement at 50." A conference on the history, impact, and contemporary relevance of the New Left's founding manifesto. Keynote speakers: Michael Kazin and Tom Hayden. Among the other participants: Gianpaolo Baiocchi, Richard Flacks, Joshua Freeman, Daniel Geary, Grace Hale, Jane Mansbridge, Lisa McGirr, James Miller, Bob Ross, Eric Olin Wright, and many Port Huron veterans. • October 14, 2011 “Symposium on the New History of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers.” In this all-day event a new generation of scholars draw upon fresh research to offer a set of bold and innovative interpretations explaining the rise and fall of the California farm worker movement. Keynote speaker: veteran labor activist and educator, Frank Bardacke, author of Trampling Out the Vintage: César Chávez and the Two Souls of the United Farm Workers (2011). • February 3-5, 2011: "West Meets East: The International Labor Organization from Geneva to the Pacific Rim." This conference brings together scholars from around the world to explore the role of the International Labor Organization and its relationship to other labor standard setting institutions in East Asia, India, and the Americas during the years following the Second World War. Keynote speakers include Leon Fink, Professor of History at University of Illinois, Chicago and Anita Chan of the China Research Centre of the University of Technology, Sydney. Participants will explore and debate the role of ILO in shaping contemporary efforts, both transnational and within a single nation, in advancing labor sandards and surrounding social, labor, and economic reform.

• January 15, 2011: "Cry Wolf Workshop" This workshop is sponsored by the San Diego-based Center on Policy Initiatives and funded by a grant from the Public Welfare Foundation.  Donald Cohen of CPI, Peter Dreier of Occidental College, and Nelson Lichtenstein of UC Santa Barbara constitute the ad hoc committee now administrating this initiative.
  
  
• October 14, 2009: "Defending the University: A 'Teach-In" on the Current Crisis."   Speakers include Stan Glantz, UC San Francisco, on UCOP’s budget blunders; George Lakoff, UC Berkeley, on framing the issues; Ruth Gilmore, University of Southern California, on California’s prison complex; California Senator Loni Hancock, on Sacramento’s legislative deadlock; Art Pulaski, California AFL-CIO, on labor’s stake in UC’s future; Nelson Lichtenstein, UCSB, on Clark Kerr’s forgotten legacy; plus student, staff and other faculty.

• January 16-17, 2009: The Right and Labor: Politics, Ideology and Imagination
  This conference expores the hostility of the political right to American trade unionism, both in terms of management-labor conflict and in the world of politics, ideas, and cultural imaginings. Contact the Center for more information.

• October 15, 2008:  Underground Undergrads Fall Campus Book Tour, 4 p.m., UCen State Street Room. 

  Undocumented UCLA students share their hardships and challenges in the fight for access to higher education.

  Underground Undergrads: UCLA Undocumented Immigrant Students Speak Out, features the growing student movement around access to higher education for undocumented students. Written by the students themselves, eight moving stories of undocumented immigrant students from UCLA provide the focal point of Underground Undergrads. The stories are unique and diverse, but they all demonstrate the pain, financial hardship, and emotional distress these students face as well as their ultimate triumph when they graduate from UCLA.

• September 27, 2008: OP-ED Writing Workshop for Labor Historians
  Ruth Rosen, the noted historian and columnist, leads an all-day workshop for those who wish to publish in the mass media and on the web. The workship will be held September 27, 2008. Contact the Center for more information.
