THE CENTER FOR COLD WAR
STUDIES PRESENTS
"RUNNING THE GAUNTLET"
A Talk with Barbara Masin
In October of 1953, five young Czech anti-communists
crossed the Czechoslovak-East German border. Bound for West
Berlin with an explosive secret message for US authorities, their
three-day journey turned into a month-long adventure of gun battles and narrow
escapes that became the largest manhunt in Cold War history.
Barbara Masin, author of Gauntlet: Five Friends, 20,000 Enemy Troops,
and the Secret That Could Have Changed the Course of the Cold War, has been
a featured speaker in Germany,
Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Her book has been translated into three languages. Inspired by the testament of
celebrated World War II resistance leader, Czech general Josef Masin, father of
two of the young men in the story and grandfather of the author, this is a
dramatic true story of courage and daring against
overwhelming odds; a story that
addresses policy and moral dilemmas facing the world even today.
