I am a specialist in the society, politics and culture of medieval Italy. In the past, I've worked on urban nobles and on Cathar heresy. My recent book explores changing ideas about male decorum: how men should grieve at funerals. I've also been drawing on the records of Bologna's criminal court in an effort to recover something of the experiences of people who don't show up in other records: concubines, scam artists, the working poor.

Research and Teaching Interests

  • My students and I conduct research in the rich civic and ecclesiastical archives that survive from the late medieval Italian towns.

Current Projects

  • Medieval Bologna as seen from the Criminal Court.
    This volume will collect revised versions of my articles based in thirteenth-century Bolognese legal records.
  • Noble Romans: Elite Culture in Thirteenth-Century Lazio.
  • "The Magnates Revisited."
    This article will appear in a volume honoring Philip Jones' "Communes and Despots."
