I work primarily with court records from fourteenth-century Florence. My is the construction of a ruling-class ideology of good order and pacification, and the strategic deployment of this ideology before Florentine tribunals by non-elites. My dissertation will use these records to construct a bottom-up, consumer-oriented view of medieval state formation: why might peasants and common Florentine citizens utilize state institutions, and how did these institutions insert themselves into daily life in Florence's subject territories?
