Graduate Student Office: HSSB 3228 Winter 2013 Hours: Wednesdays 10-12 Advisor: Peter S. Alagona Pulling from mainly archaeological and geographic sources, my current research project focuses on ancient Caribbean migrations into the Antilles from multiple mainland points, rethinking the islands as an integral part of one continent divided by water. Questioning the common characterization of the sea as a non-place and the islanders as primitive isolates, I want to explore the idea of marine connectivity, not only within the archipelago itself but also between the islands and the continental landmasses that surround it. I am increasingly interested in wandering animal life that moves between land and water freely: sea turtles, the evolution of pygmy island mammals (especially small sloths, owls and foxes), roving sea birds (or Andean Condor iconography, see below) and coastal myths of anthropomorphism.
