Students come to class with widely varying backgrounds. Many are heritage students and want to know more about their family backgrounds. Some have longstanding religious or cultural ties to the Middle East. Others are deeply concerned with U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. Still others need to know more about women and gender in Muslim societies. Our media are full of negative and completely mistaken stereotypes about the Middle East. I hope to challenge the dominant stereotypes with readings, lectures, and films that encourage students to think in new ways and to travel to the region to see for themselves. I am always glad to hear from students who have decided to participate in our EAP programs or who go on to graduate study in the Middle East. In recent years, a number of students have expressed interest in foreign service or in NGO work, as interns, volunteers, or professionals, and I am currently designing course materials for a new reading course that will serve these interests.
