Currently, I am working on my dissertation, which examines how the army influenced news published in London during the English Civil War. The central figure, Gilbert Mabbott, was the agent of the army in London as well as the parliamentary licenser for newsbooks and pamphlets. Mabbott worked in a number of circles: as client to military grandees, as one of tight group of parliamentary and military secretaries, and as a patron to the news publishing industry. He himself appears to have been involved in editing and providing intelligence for the Moderate, a particularly radical newsbook in the late 1640s.
