My dissertation research focuses on the English Navy during the first English Civil War, from 1642-1646. I am examining why the navy chose to ally itself to parliament instead of the king, why that choice was made so quickly, the importance of the attitudes and actions of several key naval officers, and how the navy was instumental in the eventual parliamentary victory.
