Twentieth-Century French History

PhD Candidate
B.A., Colorado State University

Advisor: Kenneth Mouré

I am interested in twentieth-century France, gender, and war. My dissertation explores the culture and politics of civilian dissent in Vichy France. I examine two groups mobilized in protest: students and women. Viewed as volatile and potentially powerful groups, students and housewives were courted by both Vichy and underground political parties. My project evaluates why civilians took to the streets, how they negotiated encounters with authorities, and in what ways they forged a political consciousness under the harsh conditions of German Occupation.
