The Department of History offers graduate and undergraduate courses in medieval and modern Middle Eastern and North African history. R. Stephen Humphreys, holder of the Chair in Islamic Studies, specializes in early Islamic historiography, as well as in the history of Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Turkey. Nancy Gallagher specializes in the history of modern North Africa, Egypt, and the Levant. The Department offers doctoral degrees in medieval and modern Middle East history. Students interested in the Middle East should consider affiliating with UCSB's new Islamic and Near Eastern Studies program, which is housed in the Global and International Studies Program.
