Candidates for advanced degrees in the Ancient Mediterranean
World must pass proficiency examinations in ancient Greek
and Latin and at least two modern European languages (other
than English) -- one ancient and modern language at the
MA level, and the other ancient and modern languages prior
to completion of the Ph.D. This year there were a total
of seven graduate students in the ancient Mediterranean
field.
Students interested in pursuing graduate study should first
contact our ancient Greek historian, Prof. John W. I. Lee
(email: jwilee@history.ucsb.edu),
our Roman historian, Prof. Harold Drake (drake@history.ucsb.edu),
or our Late Antique historian, Prof. Elizabeth Digeser (email:
edigeser@history.ucsb.edu)
. There are significant strengths in the Classical world
in other departments. The Classics Department's Roman Republican
historian, Robert Morstein-Marx, has affiliated status in
History. There are a number of other classicists with historical
interests (Borimir Jordan, Greek history and historiography,
Frances Hahn, Roman Religion, and Jo-Ann Shelton, Roman
social history.) Art History has a Greek and a Roman art
historian (Rainer Mack, Fikret Yegul), and there is a specialist
in ancient philosophy (Voula Tsouna) in the Philosophy department.
In the Religious Studies Department, Richard Hecht offers
courses in Judaic History, and Christine Thomas offers courses
in Hellenistic religions and early Christianity.
