This course explores the politics and culture of Italy from the fall of Rome to the age of Dante. Topics include Muslim and Norman Sicily, the rise of city-states and factional warfare, popular religion and heresy, painting and architecture. We combine informal lecture and discussion, with an emphasis on original sources, and finish with a look at where Dante put all the people we've studied in the Inferno.
