HISTORY COURSE WAITLIST/ADD POLICY

Please read these guidelines before contacting any history professor about courses

HISTORY DEPARTMENT COURSE WAITLIST/ADD POLICY

The History Department recognizes the difficulties that students face in adding courses. To ensure efficiency and fairness in the add process, the Department has formulated the following guidelines. Please read them carefully.

UPDATE June 3, 2014: eGrades has been augmented to allow automated waitlists for courses, if instructors choose to activate this feature. If you see that a course is full and a waitlist available, add your name to it. In some cases (depending on how an instructor sets the permissions), you may be added automatically when a space opens up.
If you do not see a waitlist on GOLD, the following procedure applies:

I. Lower-Division Courses (numbered 2-99) with Discussion Sections

Instructors of lower-division courses will not compile waiting lists before a quarter begins. DO NOT email an instructor and ask to be put on a wait list. Instead, attend the first lecture in person. You should also check the relevant course web page for any pre-quarter announcements.
List of Fall 2014 Courses–click on the course title to see whether documents are available, and on the Instructor’s name to check the “Announcements” section on the left side of their page.

If you want to add a course with discussion sections you should attend the first lecture. Many professors will provide additional information about their policies at the first lecture. Unless the instructor outlines a different procedure, you must attend the first meeting of the specific section you want to to add. You should attend the first section meeting even if it occurs before the first lecture. TAs will not respond to email requests to be added to a section. If you are interested in more than one section, you must attend each section and speak to the TA in person, unless the instructor outlines a different procedure at the first lecture.

If you are already enrolled in a class but fail to attend the first meeting of the section you are enrolled in, you may be automatically dropped. If you are enrolled in a section but trying to switch to a different section, you should attend both sections to avoid being dropped from the course. If you have a documented medical or family issue that prevents you from attending your first section meeting, contact the course instructor and section TA as soon as possible. Faculty instructors may set additional section attendance requirements for their courses.

Verified History majors may be given first priority for adding lower-division courses. TAs will verify History major status before issuing add codes. Being a graduating senior does not confer priority for adding, since such status cannot be verified. Faculty instructors may set additional criteria for determining which students may add.

Honors Sections

Instructors will give information regarding enrollment in Honors Sections at the first lecture meetings. No enrollment or waiting lists will be made until that time, and instructors may not respond to email inquiries.

II. Upper-Division Courses (courses numbered 100-199)

June 3, 2014: If a History course you are seeking enrollment in is full, it may have an automatic waitlist.

If not, please check the relevant instructor pages on the History department website for announcements BEFORE contacting an instructor by email. You can click through to that page from this listing of History courses (see the “Announcements” in the left column on an instructor’s page). Many instructors will post add policies on their web pages before the quarter begins. If no such policy is posted on a course or instructor’s web page, you should attend the first class and speak with the instructor in person.

Verified History majors may be given first priority for adding upper-division courses. Being a graduating senior does not confer priority for adding, since such status cannot be verified. Faculty instructors may set additional criteria for determining which students may add.
