History Graduate Students (and Alumni) Win National Awards and Fellowships

Congratulations to graduate students who have won national fellowships and awards, and to our alumni as they move up the career ladder!

Niccole Coggins (Prof. Spickard) was awarded a prestigious UC Pacific Rim Research Fellowship to do research for her dissertation, “Welcome to the ‘Rock,’ Boys! The US Military’s Influence on the Territory of Hawai’i, 1898-1959.” (4/30/12)

Olivier Dufault (Prof. DePalma Digeser) has won a two-year postdoctoral fellowship from the Québec government through the FQRSC (Fonds de recherche societé et culture- Québec). Olivier will spend 2012-2014 at Laval University in Québec City and in Paris at l’École pratique des hautes études.

Jacob D. Hamblin (Prof. Badash, PhD 2001) has been promoted to Associate Professor of History of Science in the School of History, Philosophy, and Religion at Oregon State University. Professor Hamblin is the author of two monographs, two additional ABC-CLIO volumes, and has a contract in hand for his third monograph with Oxford University Press. OSU page, blog

Viktor Schmagin (Prof. Hasegawa) has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct dissertation research in Japan during 2012-2013.

David Torres-Rouff (PhD 2006) has been teaching at Colorado College for several years. He and Christina have accepted jobs at UC Merced and will begin teaching there this fall (2012). CV

Lily Welty (Prof. Spickard, PhD 2011) will spend 2012-13 on a postdoctoral fellowship at the UCLA Institute for American Cultures.
Lily has also won the 2012 University Service Award for extraordinary service to UCSB.

Zamira Yusufjonova (Prof. Edgar) has been awarded an international fellowship from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) for 2012-2013. The fellowship will enable Zamira to conduct dissertation research in Tajikistan and Russia. (4/23/12)
