National fellowships and honors for UCSB History graduate students

Breaking news about awards and grants for 2009-2010.

UCSB PhD Rick Fogarty has won the Phi Alpha Theta Best First Book Prize for his book Race and War in France: Colonial Subjects in the French Army, 1914-1918 (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2008). Rick now teaches at SUNY Albany (SUNY faculty page, publisher’s page, amazon.com page).

The following UCSB history graduate students have received major fellowships or awards for 2009-2010. Congratulations to all!

April Haynes has won a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship, granted by the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Massachusetts. The AAS library has an unparalleled collection on early U.S. history. April has also been awarded a six-month postdoctoral fellowship from the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston.

Alan Mason has been awarded an IREX (International Research and Exchanges Board) fellowship to conduct dissertation research in Moldova.

Leandra Zarnow has won a 2009 Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies. In addition, Leandra is a recipient of a Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship, also from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation.

Nicole Pacino has won a Rockefeller Foundation grant for research at the Rockefeller Archive Center in Sleepy Hollow, NY. The Sleepy Hollow collections hold information on philanthropic and medical projects spearheaded by the Rockefeller Foundation in Latin America. Nicole’s dissertation research examines public health and nation formation in Bolivia from 1952-1964, including analysis of the role of foreign philanthropy in post-revolutionary Bolivia.

Tara Tubb has been awarded a dissertation research grant from the Council for European Studies (at Columbia University, sponsored by the Mellon Foundation) for research on how citizens were able to halt the shredding of East German Stasi secret service files and ultimately make them accessible to researchers.
