Professors Lansing and Barbieri-Low win AHA Book Awards.

Professor Lansing to receive Marraro Prize; Professor Barbieri-Low takes Breasted Prize.

Two UCSB History faculty have won major book prizes from the American Historical Association.

Carol Lansing will receive the Howard R. Marraro Prize in Italian History for her book Passion and Order: Restraint of Grief in the Medieval Italian Communes (Cornell University Press, 2007).

The Marraro Prize was established by Howard R. Marraro (b. 1897), a historian of Italian culture. Marraro made bequests to the American Historical Association, the American Catholic Historical Association, and the Society for Italian Historical Studies. A joint committee from these three associations selects a single book in Italian history in any epoch, in Italian cultural history, or in Italian American relations to receive the Marraro Prize. All submissions must be the work of resident citizens of the United States or Canada.

Anthony Barbieri-Low will receive the James Henry Breasted Prize for his book Artisans in Early Imperial China (University of Washington Press, 2007).

This prize, named in honor of James Henry Breasted, a pioneer in ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern history and President of the Association in 1928, is awarded for the best book in English on any field of history prior to the year 1000 A.D. The prize was endowed by Joseph O. Losos, a longtime member of the Association. The prize was first awarded in 1985. Until 1999, it rotated annually among the following geographical areas: Near East and Egypt; Far East and South Asia; Africa, North America, and Latin America; and Europe. Artisans in Early Imperial China is only the second book in Chinese history to win the Breasted Prize. The book is also a finalist for the 2009 Charles Rufus Morey Book Award from the College Art Association.

The awards will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association in January 2009.
